Default Sorbitol?

I just bought Smuckers Sugar-Free Syrup. It has 8 carbs. 7 if those being sorbitol. Is that any comparison to sugar alcohols? Would you minus those 7 from the 8. Or do you have to bite the bullet for quality and spare the 8 carbs.

Depends on if you do atkins by the book or not. Some people on atkins treat ths book as if it was the bible and follow every single rule in it to a tee.

I eat sugar alcohols and have no probs with them at all. Mostly I eat them in SF jams & jellies. Of course I wouldn't sit there and eat like 50g SA at once, LoL. I personally subtract all the SAs from everything I eat and don't have any probs with it.

Astrocreep, you are following the book. To a 'tee' The most recent addition of the book allows SAs and subtracts them from the net carbs.

That being said, there are those of us that feel like the SA stance in the new book is a pile of crap and stems not from a desire to help people make better food choices but from a desire to sell more frankenfood. Sugar alcohols:

A. Digest
B. Metabolize
C. Impact blood sugar
D. Impact ketosis

All facts. All backed up by study after study. The only people on this planet stating otherwise, are, you guessed it, Atkins Nutritionals.

This isn't to say that they have the same impact as sugar. They definitely have less impact. But beyond any shadow of a doubt, these aren't non-impact foods.

Bnicook, you can go 'by the book' if you like, or you can take a smarter route and see how you respond to them physically. Everyone reacts differently. SAs are more than just ascertaining a carb count and subtracting it from a daily total. They take a little extra awareness. If you're being stalled, not losing quickly enough or experiencing cravings, these could very well be the culprits.

And this is all from a perspective of carb/glycemic impact. SAs have their laxation/digestive issues as well.

Thanks! I eat food with sugar alcohols in them all the time. Doesn't seem to bother my weight loss. I just wasn't sure if Sorbitol was considered a sugar alcohol. So thanks all!
