Default Auto immune disease

My wife has a condition called auto-immune disease. This conditon shows its ugly head in several ways. She has severe bouts with rheumatoid arthritis, raynauds disease, fibromyalgia, metabolic myopathy and similar conditions. All of these conditions are classified as auto-immune diseases and she has been in constant pain for many years now. There is no known cure, only medications to help relieve the symptoms.

She is at her wits end and is willing to try anything for some pain relief. I am wondering if getting her on a low carb diet would help? At the present time she eats a very high carb diet but does not have much weight that she can afford to lose, max would be 10 lbs. Can you go on a low carb diet without losing much weight and just see if there is some medical benefits from it that would help her?

My wife wants her life back, I want my wife back. The doctor just keeps giving her more pills, something has to change. Please help if you can. Thanks

Toughguy, I strongly suggest you get a copy of "Protein Power Lifeplan" by the Drs. Eades. Their book is not so much a diet book but a plan for optimum health and nutrition. They devote a chapter to auto immune diseases (M.S., Crohn's, RA, Lupus, Thyroid Disease) and the relationship that exists between it and leaky gut sydrom (which is correlated to a diet rich in grains).

Both my boyfriend and mother have an auto-immune disease. John has Crohn's and my mom has rheumatoid arthritis. Both are healthier than they have ever been LCing. John has actually stopped exhibiting any symptoms of Crohn's and has not taken is meds for a year. I truly believe there is something to this.

Doug,

Thanks for the link. It looks like that website is under construction right now but I will be checking back to it.

Nat,

Sounds like you have had a first hand experience with this. I will look for the book you suggested. Thanks

I was diagnosed with Lupus three years ago. I've had bouts with Arthritis, IBS, Raynaud's, chronic fatigue, pluerisy, etc., etc. My rheumatologist is very supportive of low-carb diets and often recommends LC to his patients. I began Atkins in late February and feel so much better. I had one minor flare since LCing, late April and only lasted about 2 - 3 weeks. Since then, it's been smooth sailing. I even began lifting weights again after stopping for over a year.

I hope this helps and I wish your wife the best.

Brenda
