Good fats 'halve motor-neurone disease'
A simple diet change can halve your risk of developing motor neurone disease, experts believe.
Increasing your daily intake of polyunsaturated fat found in fish and green vegetables as well as taking vitamin E was effective in preventing the muscle-wasting disease.
Researchers found a daily intake of more than 32g of the fat and between 18 and 22mg of vitamin E cut the risk of developing the disease by up to 60 per cent.
Polyunsaturated fats include omega 3 and 6 are found in certain vegetable oils, fish and green leafy vegetables.
Motor neurone disease is a progressive fatal condition that causes wasting of the muscles. It affects about 5,000 people in the UK and is most common among people aged 50 to 70.
Experts questioned 132 patients with motor neurone disease about their diet and compared the results with those of 220 healthy people.
The intake of dietary supplements for both groups was the same but their total intake of fats differed according to diet.
The study was published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
