Default Cereal

Hi all...

Does anyone know if Flax O Meal cereal (or something like it) is available anywhere in Australia (Sydney specifically).

Alternatively, is there a tasty recipe anyone knows of I could make my own?

Thanks
Sweetie

Hi Sweetie,

I'm not aware of Flaxomeal being available here. But you can make a cereal yourself with flax seeds (know as linseeds here).

While I don't care for linseeds myself, a lot of folk love them. You can buy linseeds in supermarkets or health food shops. If they are not ready ground, you can grind them in a coffee grinder.

This is the recipe I was given:
Take 3 tablespoons ground linseeds, add 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon Splenda (or to taste). Add about 150 mL very hot, not quite boiling water (if you use boiling water, or heat the meal to boiling in the microwave, it apparently goes all slimy). Then add about 50 mL cream. I also tried it with the boiling water, cream and Cottees chocolate diet topping. Still didn't care for it.

You can also buy LSA, which is a mix of linseeds, sunflower and almond meal. Might be more palatable. of course, others think that the linseed meal is yummy. Maybe I'm just weird.

I believe you should keep the ground meal in the fridge.

Cheers.

Rosebud

Here is a recipe I got off usenet:

"I would suggest making a whole bag of this and keeping it in the freezer. This recipe is for approximately a one pound bag.

2 cups flax seed meal
2 cups wheat bran
8 scoops vanilla protein powder
teaspoon salt
teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Mix together all these dry ingredients in a gallon sized ziplock bag. You can add chopped nuts and/or unsweetened coconut if you want to. Keep in freezer, and when you want some just scoop out about a half a cup, then add boiling water and stir. (maybe a half a cup of boiling water, give or take) Eat with
cream, butter and Splenda. That's IT. Total cost about 3 bucks. (if that) Will keep in freezer for 6 months to a year.
Happy Lowcarbing,
Julee"

I haven't tried it yet, but I've read good reviews. Flaxmeal is just ground linseeds.

Cheers,
Tara

Default Wow guys, thanks

Thanks guys...

I was able to get used to the Flax cereal when I was in USA and I liked it. I feel healthier when I'm getting the extra fibre.

The recipie looks like something to make, I guess you can experiment and add some flavour essences too... thinking almond essence, bananna, hazlenut... could be interesting.

Thanks again.

Default Hot Cinnamon Cereal

Thanks for your replies....

I found this recipe on the internet and tried it today. It was delicious.

Ingredients:
3 Tablespoons Flax Meal
3 Tablespoons Vanilla Protein Powder
2/3 cup Water
dash Salt
1 Tablespoon Butter
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
Artificial Sweetener (Stevia) to taste
1/4 cup Heavy Cream -- well chilled

Mix first 4 ingredients until smooth. Microwave approximately 2 minutes. Top with butter, Sweetener, cinnamon and cream.

Makes 1 serving. 2 carbs per serving if using stevia sweetener (I do.) Adjust as necessary if you use a different sweetener.
