Authentic aioli is more about the garlic and less about the fat source (oil vs. mayo). As others have noted, there are many, many versions out there .
The name literally means "garlic and oil".

Personally, I love the taste of roasted garlic, which you can buy in jars at the grocery store. To make a small batch of faux aioli, mix together ½ cup mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp roasted garlic purée, 1 tsp lemon juice and a few dots of hot sauce .. not so much to make it hot, but just enough to punch up the umami taste . No sweetener.
