Great article by Georgie Ede

This is well worth the read, clear and to the point. "Obesity Stop Shaming Start Understanding"

Im curious as to her audience for this article. For those of us that have battled the buldge, we know it is NOT for lack of trying. It is a metabolic disease, and DANDR gave me the food list to manage the disease. But for those that have not experienced the frustrations and low self esteem of " just eat less", they are the ones that judge. And the doctors that follow the same line of advice, are NOT helping.

Who is the target audience? Is it the doctors? They as a whole seem to be behind the times.

Thank you, Jean. What a thoughtful, informative article. This quote resonates very strongly with me:
Quote:
Keep in mind that none of us knows where someone else with obesity may be on their journey. The person you see who currently weighs 275 pounds may have weighed 325 pounds last year. The person you see may have the wrong information, tried many times to lose weight, and decided to take a break or even give up. The person you see may have all the right information but decided it’s too much work to fight obesity or chooses not to prioritize their weight or health at this time for whatever reason—that’s their prerogative—it’s their body.

It's what I am reminded of whenever someone who has improved their health through lifestyle changes and thinks they have the answer wishes to intervene with others to "help" them. I find this tendency appallingly presumptuous. Be kind and understand that you'll never know what our fellow human spirits have experienced.

Ms A - as for target audience, I believe the article is intended for anyone who can read. These tender and sensitive thoughts should be understood by all, as behaviors and addictions formed by inaccurate, misguided, and damaging dietary guidelines bolstered by the medical community and reinforced by years of eating within the guidelines have caused many of us to develop unhealthy relationships with foods, processed or otherwise.

I feel this is vital information that the vast majority of people do not know.

From the article:

Quote:
When a 50-year old man with obesity dies from a heart attack we think of it as his own fault for overeating himself to death. When a 50-year old active man of normal weight dies from a heart attack, we are shocked, mystified and feel his life was unfairly cut short—“but he was so healthy!”

Of course, BOTH men were unhealthy— or they wouldn’t have died of a heart attack.

I have tried and tried to explain this to people: yes, he was active and vegetarian and slim and this did not mean he was healthy. The heart attack proves he was not!

-cough- inflammation -cough-

But then I sound like a lunatic. This kind of science-based information is so much needed. Because we cannot judge the general public's level of understanding by our own: we are 99th percentile, and they are down there in the 25th and below.

As someone who lived with that shame for so long, I found myself nodding a fair bit while reading this.

Grav, that dominating emotion, shame, is ubiquitous.

And unfortunately it steals motivation and self worth.

I often think how to change my community, for some ten years. Roadblocks everywhere. I have been tinkering with posting fliers, with tear offs, listing one great book to buy to start the lc journey and listing a support site like this one. Im not gifted enough to design a captivating layout to advertise on the flier, but Im working on it anyway.
