Can statins save your life?

Interesting question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...d&v=SlU49eojexY

The average benefit of taking statins is an extension of 14 days to your life.

OMG Nancy, there's been so much "pro-statin carpet bombing" as I would characterize it it, in the media lately, the latest I read was that statins reduce cognitive decline: (http://www.theheart.org/article/1578833.do?) All those memory losses are just your imagination, I guess. If you read the health media, they are good for just about everything!

I know one thing: statins will ruin my liver. Can't take them - last time I tried, the doctor called me after a blood test result and said to stop taking them immediately.

I thought it was very interesting comparing how cancer medications and statins are talked about.

With cancer meds they talk about how many months they add to your life. With statins they don't. They just talk about how they "save" your life.

Very good, short video. Only 6 minutes and well worth watching.

Lost my mind with statins!

My doctor loves them, but I get so confused I start making mistakes at work!
It so frightening to lose your mind! This sounds awful, but I'd rather "go on" than go through that confusion. I felt like my two choices were dying or dementia and I'm too young for either one!

Nancy, do you know what this video was? I clicked on it and it says it is now unavailable. I am working on compiling together some information for a friend who is soon considering beginning statins. I'd like to hit them with the science of why statins are so bad and see if he turns on to the LC angle from there with the information I give him.

I don't know where I found that link. I'm sorry. :( Click the Cholesterol/Statin link in my signature though. I usually catalog everything I run across.

Here's another one for you: http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article/8...terol-bombshell

Thanks and no worries. I've made my way through the first page so far :)

Thank you for the link!

That list has them sorted oldest first it seems.

They made me lose my memory. I'm not convinced they will save my life.

I hear ya. I had a bad experience with menopause; down to two hours of sleep a night, no memory, stress handling went from the high 80's to like 3. I wound up DEMANDING Hormone Replacement Therapy. I didn't care if it took ten years off my life! I wasn't having a life at that point.

But of course, it's not shortening my life. That study that panicked everyone was done on women who were 20 years past the change when they started on the hormones. That's apparently a bad idea. But new research indicates that starting right away, like I did, really is protective.

Anyway, that's a side issue. Because there are no studies that show benefit in women who take statins!

To me, the side effects are so frightening, I would never come near them. Dr. Graveline, who wrote Lipitor, Thief of Memory, not only had the memory problems, he thinks he developed an ALS-type disease from their destructive metabolic effects!
