High Protein / Low Fat / Low Carb Vegetarian Options

I'm starting to look for lower fat options to add to my diet. I've been a low carb / high fat person for the past two and a half years but a recent LDL cholesterol test ( http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=465153 ) has motivated me to find ways to reduce my fat intake.

So I'm doing my normal shopping today and going through the veggie area when I see "Lightlife Gimme Lean Ground Sausage", a soy based faux sausage. I look at the label and it's 7gProtein / 0g Fat / (7-3)=4g Carb. Pretty good! I got it but the taste is just edible at best. Now I'm wondering though if anyone has some recommendations for High Protein / Low Fat / Low Carb options and I thought this forum might be a good place to ask.

Oops misread

Hi

(Sorry - misread - thought you were asking how to cut fat down)

Most vegetarian foods that are touted as high protein are also high carb. (Beans for example) Nuts are better but calorific ;) Anyway, I would suggest you check out fatsecret in considering foods to add.

I'm cutting my calories this time around and I've replaced cream with Almond Milk, cut my butter use in half, have half the bacon and cheese I used to. (I.e., pretty big fat reduction) I don't think meat substitutes are necessary but that's just MHO.

There aren't a ton of high protein options. I think organic tofu would be a good choice. I also use Morningstar veggie meat (grillers and sausage patties are my favorite, although not gluten-free like I'm trying now). Cottage Cheese, plain yogurt (add your own flavors like vanilla and sweetener such as Stevia/Erythritol), string cheese, eggs, whey or egg protein shakes. I tend to eat moderate protein, not high, with enough fat to keep satiated.

As for the tofu, if it isn't organic, it will have a lot of pesticides/mold inhibitors.
Some people think tofu tastes strange, but I always make it the following way and it is delicious! It isn't completely low-fat though since I use some oil...

Tofu "scramble":
*Chop up a block of tofu in small pieces.
*Saute with olive oil, Mrs. Dash seasoning, spices (garlic, pepper, etc.)
*Add chopped mushrooms
*Add Teriyaki, probably a couple tablespoons--one at the beginning and one toward the end ( I use a gluten-free option)
*Add diced onion to taste.
*Saute until golden or lightly browned.

Let us know how it goes!

ok so tofu is out for me. I have a thyroid condition that makes it like poison for me. I need protein and don't want to get it from supplements..as a new vegetarian..I'm very confused.

To lower LDL, I would try exercise before a low fat diet....

Low fat low carb is really hard on the body. Protein is not a good source of energy, it's job is to build and manta in muscle.

Also, processed soy products are not a great choice.

I would include things like:
Fresh edamame, miso, tofu or tempeh
Greek yogurt or cottage cheese

Higher fat things that won't harm LDL
Seeds or nuts- pumpkin seeds, almonds, peanuts, flax seed made into "bread" or crackers, etc.....nut butters like almond or peanut......
Eggs
Cheese

I also like some beans in form of hummus, but keep portions to 1/4 cup.

You wrote in your intro that you will eat chicken, fish and dairy...that's gives you many options for protein, low or high fat.

I think I'll respond to my two year old thread....

I figured out that all I really needed to do was add more lean beef, chicken and fish to my diet. The problem is I am not a fan of lean beef, chicken and fish! So I don't worry about it anymore.

Also your weight is still high, at 220. If you were say 170 at 5'9, your cholesterol would be lower. My cholesterol is weight related.

Well that's the issue I think.
