Sugar: The Bitter Truth (The SHORT Version) This useful summary of Lustig's presentation may be helpful as the full version does get a bit complex.
If you search this site you will find several other threads in which Lustig's lecture has been discussed.

I found myself distracted from the lecture when he said americans could buy - was it in texas - a 60oz coke, a packet of doritos and a chocolate bar for 99cents! In the UK food is so expensive that you can only get a large snickers for the equivalent of 99cents. To buy the above combo would cost the equivalent of maybe $7. Not that you can get a 60oz coke here.

Edit to say that a pack of 5 fresh chicken fillets costs the aquivalent of $10. Low carb is seriously expensive here. And organic meat is even more expensive.

Hmmn. Might be a 'special' there. I've lived in a variety of states and I think you can buy each of those things -- 'large' version of the bar -- for 99cents EACH, but I've never seen them together. As for the 60oz drink, that is usually only the kind of price you see when places are using it pull in customers, such as gas station quick-food marts, via tap. Buying it in the bottle is a lot more (~1.25 for a 1 litre bottle, although at the dollar store you can get 4 litres for 99 cents).

The cheapest thing pretending to be food, by far, is dried Ramen noodles. You can get them 10 packages for $1, sometimes more with specials. I had a number of friends who literally lived on those in college as they were poor.

In college I remember living off a large bag of rice for several weeks because I'd ran out of money - just shows carbs are cheaper and tend to be the main affordable food when we're poor.
