Thud's Funhog Log (365 days)

I thought it would be kind of fun to document what I call "exercise" or "working out" for one year. To me, exercise is having fun doing something physical. Training is practicing (something specific physical or mental) to have more fun while I'm having fun and perhaps avoid injury.

I thought it also be a good way to expand on explanation of activity and intensity of log entries I make here http://downhaul.com/lowcarb/daily.txt Perhaps this might be useful for anyone exploring fun new things to do with your changing body. Mine is changing, that's for sure.

If you have any questions about anything you see here, let me know and I'll be happy to share or answer specific questions.

====

So to start off the winter season after a lay off of about 10 days of no funhogging we found some fresh ice (about 4 inches of black, clear ice) to ride on. The folks that fly around in the DN class iceboats are the ones to follow - they know their ice conditions!

So for me it was lazy kiteskating for about 4 hours on a bluebird day. The activity is fairly gentle but doing it for so long produced very SORE body the next day and today (we were out there on Saturday)

Some pictures...

Little movie made holding iphone. brrr...

That was so fun to watch Thud!! :agree:
Felt like I was on the board with you...
Almost got dizzy looking down at the ice passing by so fast.

Thanks for the visit Meme. Ya, we take out boards a bit later when there is more snow on the ice - skis and snowboards. For now ice skates are the ticket!

Wow, so you're on ice skates...
That must be a full body workout!

thud123 Tue, Nov-14-17 11:56

... and Sunday we got to go snowboarding for the first time this season. Funny how there's only about 2 weeks of No Windsurfing right to kiteskating and snowboarding. Use what the conditions provide and ride! - didn't even hurt myself first time out, only my ego ;)

Looks like lots of fun.

Is that artificial snow?
I don't see snow in the surrounding areas near the trees..

Yes it is man-made. They concentrate on making one useable run if the temps are cold enough early. Usually they will be open Thanksgiving like this so it's a bit early :) I'm lucky this year I guess.

Looks like they will be open again this weekend from about noon to 6PM if conditions remain as predicted, which is rare around here ;)

I thought this was kind of interesting. My scale weight was way up a day after beating myself up on the ice and snow - last 3 days I've been extremely sore all over from the beating but this morning the soreness has pretty much disappeared and so has perhaps the fluids in my that were doing what ever they do to make my body un-sore again.

Don't worry about weight change after a beating, drink all the water your body tells you to thru thirst.

Snowboarding yesterday, up 3.6 lbs on scale :) Ice kiting today, leaving in 45 mins, maybe I'll gain a few more lbs haha!

thud123 Mon, Nov-20-17 06:32

Back from kiteskating yesterday. Was glorious 4 hour continuous session, only decoupled from the kite once to grab my phone and take a little video of my buddy on his snowboard and something called a switchblade - kind of like and iceskateblade attached tot he rail of a snowboard. I was simply using ice skates - so much learning happened yesterday - high speed tacks are almost there.

Movie below that was made from cell phone then a bunch of effects in iMovie

Weight prediction correct! I buy a gallon of water for the ride home (2hr) and drink half, more thirst at home so I'm guessing I probably, along with coffee, drank nearly 2 gallons of water yesterday. We'll see if what happened post last weekend happens again. looking down in the shower today I'd say my stomach is as flat as it's been since I started low carb eating over 2 years ago! Weird!

So you gained a couple of lbs in water weight? Maybe it went into your muscles and it will be gone by tomorrow.
It looks so beautiful there. Nice and quiet I'll bet!

Hi Meme, yeah water is good for putting on weight. Water is your friend :) Heels both on the inside and the outside.

I stumbled across another person that is interested in the kind of sailing I'm exploring. He lives out East and I believe this is on Lake Erie - We both ride on the Go Foil Maliko and somehow I found his site where he's posted some videos and pictures. Makes his own boards too! Hope to get to meet and ride with him some day but here's what Windsurf Foiling looks like that I love doing...I'll have to wait till the water gets soft again around here tho ;)

I'm doing some fun water stuff over Thanksgiving. I'll hopefully have something to post when I get back.

Have fun on the water Meme! - I've put all those toys away. I talked to the board maker guy that built my foil board. I had not heard from him and last night he said he was mixed up in the Las Vegas shooting that happened a while ago. Wow. He sounds OK, no details.

A couple of notes:

When cleaning today I found an old "Accu-Measure" body fat caliper and MyoTape that I must have bought a long time ago. Using the procedure explained in the manual my skinfold reading was 6-8 mm - I took this a bunch of times. The chart says that puts me around 14-16 percent body fat. I guess that's fairly "normal" The BMI at my height and todays weight says "overweight" - It's really great when you don't really care what either say, mostly a curriousity. Feeling great and fit is what counts to me, however, the paddle boards, kites, windsurf rigs and surfboard DO care about weight but you can have different size boards to match what ever weight you find yourself at.

It seems that I recovered in about the same time from last weekends beating, maybe a bit quicker as the same muscles were uses as I did the same activities just on different days. Might get out Friday snowboarding if not, this weekend hopefullly. Not much physical stuff during the week. Plenty of sleep this time of year.

Oh no your poor friend was in Los Vegas...eek
Anybody mixed up in that will surely have some PTSD from that trauma..
I mean, we had a crazy guy here about a year ago that positioned himself on a busy street only about 1000 feet from our house and he went on for over an hour shooting non-stop. Just the sound of it all with only one house in between but at least were sheltered, somewhat. But there is shellshock from that experience. I can't even imagine the trauma those people who survived went through in LV.

On a happier note....That's great how your body fat is normal now Thud!!
Whoop Whoop!! :cheer: :cheer:

Thanks for the visit Meme! Was another "weekend warrior" weekend - same basic activites; snowboarding, kite flying, skating and a combination of them at times... Interesting that my weight keeps getting lower after weekends of physical use/abuse - No injuries this weekend but I did manage to go really fast and found a little GPS app that does tracks and stuff. I downloaded it about the middle of my session yesterday and tracked for about an hour kiteskating - cool. I'm going to shoot for 40+ MPH on skates this winter, Yesterday there was only 5-10 mph wind and I was able to hit almost 25. Thursday is looking like a day to take off work on try...

Hand held iPhone video - maybe I'll get one of the GoPro things for christmas

Good Morning Thud, I was thinking about you just the other day, because i don't know you well, I don't know the answer to this question, so please, I was wondering, you are an extremely active person, you always seem to be partaking in some great activity, were you always an active person, or is this all new since the change in lifestyle and weight loss? You are IMO one of the great success stories on our forum, and also a very interesting character, so thanks for the inspiration and keep on keepin' on. ttyl

Basically yes. However, since my college days it was noted that I could put on beer weight fast and take it off fast too with activity. The beer finally won the race, in more ways than one. Now I am here, changed again - no success. no failure. Just change.

thud123 Fri, Dec-01-17 07:05

Long session on the ice yesterday with DN Ice boaters. And some new friends riding their home made slider. I have to seriously get a pair of those blades (they are less than 100 dollars) and join them. Made a little movie of DN ice boats rounding mark and the guys riding the rail once... short film

http://downhaul.com/icesail/171130N...ractice-web.mp4

My own riding was really fun too in the "non optimal" conditions of off shore wind - I was shooting for 40 MPH but only recorded 35 - I don't see a problem going 40 on skates - just have to be at the right spot at the right time - kind of like switching to low carbing - right spot, right time

Session 3:
Distance: 11.2 miles
Elapsed Time: 38:56.4
Avg Speed: 17.2 mph
Max Speed: 35.6 mph

Numbers for last month that I'll append to http://downhaul.com/lowcarb/daily.txt later today. Start of a new month begins. NO GOALS just continue to moderate and monitor carb intake.

Is that also a drone on the ice in the background?
Thanks for posting!

Yeah Meme those guys were all setup with a gimbaled camera and little drone. No expense too much to get good footie. I'm heading out of town this weekend to kite skate up north, hope to find a place to stay this evening. I play it by ear, just like everything else haha...

Had a good weekend of "exercise" - I did have to travel 6 hours round trip, spend $140 for sleeping on top of a bedspread, have my truck windows smashed and robbed of stuff and the excitement of watching the sheriffs to detective work and recover stuff, and seeing a Bigfoot or what some some call Sasquatch or Yeti! In other words just a regular weekend for me.

First, becuase I'm sure you're doubtful, video of Bigfoot...

http://downhaul.com/kites/171202isl...Bigfoot-web.mp4

The best hot tub I never used!

Picture of ice after a skating party the night before under a full moon. Cool!

Current kite setup idea with anchor and leash, working good. We'll see in more wind...

and some tracks recorded. I got stuck going around the little island, no wind there and had to skate out. Fun.

I have to go back up and fetch the stuff that was snatched. I think I'll also ask the Sheriff for contact info on the folks that took it. They are in jail and it would be good for them and myself to let them know they are forgiven and ask if there is anything I can help them with. Apparently they need some or they would likely not damage and take property. Maybe they can make a change in their paths!

Meme#1 Tue, Dec-05-17 09:50

Sorry your truck got broken into but amazing that they caught them. I'm sure that yours wasn't the first.
What's that about Big Foot? Oh now I see him, he a big one! Is that a dropping from him? It looks much bigger than the coyote's, and it didn't digest the grass.
That's a nice hot tub though. Great to relax after a long day having fun! On top of the bedspread, I had to laugh at that one, it must be a guy thing, ask me how I know.....LOL

Honestly you can't leave anything in a car anywhere in the world, these days. That's what kept us from doing a lot of things in Maui a couple of years ago. Smash and grabbers....There were so many places we just wanted to jump in the ocean but couldn't.
This time in Mex I bought a couple of waterproof fanny packs for the IDs and phones. They really worked but that doesn't help with all of your equipment.
How in the world did the police catch them? Glad they did!!

thud123 Mon, Dec-11-17 12:50

Another weekend warrior thingie, drove 5 hrs to kiteskate 3.5hrs on Sat then yesterday had a ball in low wind in kiteskate then then after the wind died a friend and I tested some "black ice" that we were afraid to kite/board on without checking. My buddy is smart, he made me inch my way out to the edge of the black abyss and drive down my ice screw. The white ice was over 4 inches and we consider that "safe" the black ice was just over 3 inches.

Pure black ice with hardly a bubble in it. It was weird, like skating in a dream with all the refelctions of the setting sun playing tricks on our eyes.

No one got wet or drowned or nothin so it was a good day!

Video Link Below:

http://downhaul.com/kites/171210Was...onBlack-web.mp4

And just before packing up a picture of a sunset that never ended, it just kept changing. Life is good. It all ends to soon I'm sure :)

Hoping for some actual SNOW to ride on. LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOOOOWWW! :)

Season Greetings to all!
