Quitting Synthroid ???

Last September, bloodtest showed my TSH was 13. My doctor started me on synthroid and got my levels in the normal range a few months ago at 75mcg.

When I got the 13 TSH reading, I was taking some OTC diet pills, trying to lose weight. I NEVER had any hypothyroid symptoms until I started taking the meds. Now, I have gained 15lbs that I cannot lose, am exhausted all the time, angry and crabby and don't break out in welts.

Could the diet pills I was taking have raised my TSH? I am considering quitting the synthroid as I go back in about 4 weeks for more bloodwork just to see how I feel and to see what my TSH will be w/o the meds.

It's just odd to me that I didn't seem to have any symptoms until I started the meds. It's SO frustrating.

Most of us do not do well on Synthroid which is a T4 med only. A lot of us do not convert the prohormone T4 into the active hormone T3 very well and need it added to our meds regiman. T3 is prescription Cytomel or many take natural porcine thyroid meds like Armour, Naturethoid or Westhroid which contain both. Check out a website called stopthethyroidmadness.com to learn and research some more. Once you have thyroid disease and are medicated it is rare to be able to stop them. TSH is not the proper testing for thyroid disease alone. TSH=thyroid stimulating hormone and is produced by the pituitary gland. You need free T3, free T4, Vitamin D and ferritin level testing also. :)
