Getting Through the Holidays

Can’t find an old thread on this except in Maintenance, so starting with a new article by Dana Carpenter:

Eat, Drink and Say No Thank You.

Good suggestions by Carpender. It's interesting what types of pushers we encounter at this time of year. Many psychological dynamics at play. I really focus on carbs being a drug, as she states, and I cannot allow myself to become dependent again on that drug. It's very simple, I am a recovering carb addict, and I need to stay the course to protect my health and well being.

Edited to add: As Carpender recommends, I simply say no thank you to the carb pushers with no explanation. If the host is persistent, I simply say, "I am not able to eat that food." Usually, it stops at that point.

Thanks for the posting. I did much better this year for Thanksgiving. Listened to Obesity Code podcast and took their suggestions of eating s lot of vegetables on turkey day. Still wasn't perfect. Almost completely back on plan now.

I was the cook for Thanksgiving, so those at table (hubby & brother) got to eat what I cooked. Highest carb (before dessert) were the parsnips and carrots in the cauli mash. Roast duck, gravy (reduced, not thickened with flour), Brussel sprouts, roast carrots, broccoli slaw, savory cranberry sauce, a couple of corn muffins out of the freezer for the guys; and, of course, the veg mash. A smoked salmon appetizer with cream cheese. They both said they felt pleasantly full, not "stuffed". They even opted to wait till Friday for my brother's really excellent tiramisu. No doubt it was easier as there were so few at table, but I felt quite pleased with the whole event. Scale shows little damage. Both guys know, and appreciate, what I am doing, and my success, though neither cares to emulate me. Hubby should, but won't. Brother is not 100% healthy, but skinny, so sees no need.

Excellent approach!

I have found what works for me is focusing on treats I can have.

Shrimp cocktail with homemade sauce. High-end rib eyes with gourmet blue cheese dressing. Fancy cheeses, prosciutto, and gourmet coffee. Nine kinds of pickles from the health food store. A visit to the Olive Bar at the grocery store. Bacon, bacon, bacon :)

Faaaaaaaat.

All of these were denied me when I was eating low fat, and I craved them!
