Hello, Fellow Low Carbers
 
I am am a type 2 diabetic with one kidney, due to Renal Cell Carcinoma. I am trying to decide what diet to follow. I was always high protein, low carb. Now the high protein worries me because of my one kidney. I do see Drs. on regular basis. My cancer was caught due to a lap band slippage. Lap band and kidney has been removed, but I have gained weight since then. I have never been model slim, trust me. I thought I could get some great advice and pick up knowledge on this site. You have been through a lot, glad you are doing well. Since you are on a LC forum, that is what I will recommend but obviously you must check with your doctor if having one kidney would compromise your ability to metabolize protein.
My comments are: 1. LC does not have to be high protein, it is only moderate protein, and a few doctors like Ron Rosedale recommend quite low levels. LC is a high fat diet. 2. A Low Carb diet should be the first line treatment for T2 diabetes, good info on that here: http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=45 You would be overall healthier by controlling your BG through diet to reverse the T2. http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=467426
3. I am a also a cancer survivor for ten years and it is one of the reasons I started and continue to eat No Sugar, no starch and no processed seed oils. The research in the past few years on using a Ketogenic diet in conjunction with conventional cancer treatment has exploded. There is one thread about cancer here http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...13&page=1&pp=15 An extension of this research is to also use a Ketogenic diet for prevention of a recurrence.
So one idea may be to read a new book other than Atkins or on-line website like the one linked above to get more information on how a well-formulated, only moderate protein diet could work for you. All the best,

Thank you for your response. You give some very good advice. I have ordered The Schwarzbein Principle: The Truth about Losing Weight, Being Healthy and Feel book. I am just winging the low carb right now due to diabetes. I am very interested in reading the book. I think that I just want enough protein for the energy factors, but I prefer the lower fat as in chicken and fish overall.

Good to know the book can still be ordered. Published in 1999 it was a good LC program for women, but Dr Schwarzbein appears to be semi-retired and that forum is not active, so maybe ask any questions you have on the general low carb or diabetes sub-forum. Would also suggest if you add whole grain carbs like oatmeal or rice as allowed on her program that you check your BG after eating that meal, advice here: http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2014/...ool-fingertips/
