Hot Flashes

Hi All,

I tried to do a search on this subject, but didn't come up with a match. I probably don't know how to use it. Back to my question. I'm over 50, periods done for 4 years now. I can't say that I really suffered much with hot flashes. A night here and there I'd get warm. Now after going LC I have frequent Hot flashes 2-3 times a week. The kind where I have to throw the covers off ASAP or I feel I might explode. I don't seem to have this problem during the day however or should I say "Thank Goodness".

Can this be a symptom of the diet (fat burning while sleeping) or is this something that just seems to happen to women in general after menopause?

Are you using coconut oil or MCT oil? Those give me hot flashes.

I use vitamin E and Lecithin for mine

I use coconut oil, usually only in the a.m. When I cook in the evening, its either bacon fat or lard. I sometimes use the coconut oil, but that is rare.

I may have to take something. The nights that I have the flashes, I can wake up 1 - 3 times a night.

Hmmmm, now that you mention it...
I've had something like hot flashes too, since going low carb! Mainly noticeable at night because it wakes me up, but some during the day.
I went through menopause before 50, with no hot flashes or any symptoms that I noticed!
I thought this was odd now, but didn't connect it to my WOE.
I use some coconut oil, but not huge amounts.

Maybe our "pause" took it literally and paused for too long.

I had another "attack" last night. I was so hot. It doesn't last long, maybe 2 min. max

Can you associate it with a big helping of protein? I used to eat big protein dinners in the evening and that did it. (like 10 ounces of sirloin and I'm only 5'2") I theorize that it raised my insulin. big meals overall did it too.

glidergirl Mon, Sep-01-14 14:29

Seejay, that's interesting. I'll have to more cognizant of the two.

I used to have horrible hotflashes. I would be freezing and sweaty at the same time. I used a combo of soy/ vit E/ and Lecithin. It worked pretty well, I still get hot flashes but not so bad

I'll have to see if that is the case with me. I didn't have alot of protein yesterday. I try to stay within the 4-6 oz each meal. I had 5 oz of tuna for lunch and prob. 4 oz last night of sirloin and I can only account for 1 hot flash last night. Like I mentioned I had a few bouts of it when my periods stopped but it was so infrequent. Now it's almost nightly. I had a really big steak on Saturday, and I think my flashes were more. Hmmm I'll keep this in mind. Thank you.

Things I've connected to hot flashes:

Drinking anything hot
Drinking coffee (caffeine)
Eating too many carbs
Drinking booze

That's pretty typical, BTW, except maybe the carbs.

I'm suffering badly from hot flashes too, Meintc. I can't particularly associate them with this way-of-eating, although they certainly have gotten worse since I began seriously low-carbing, because I just happened to start Tamoxifen at the very same time. I wake up and am boiling, throw the covers off, and as I cool down my skin starts to hurt. Awful. The idea did occur to me that there might be an association with fat-burning. I wish it were so.

JEY100 Mon, Sep-22-14 15:43

Sadly pivoine, it is more likely the tamoxifen. Some side effects got better, some worse over the four years I took it (why did not make it to five)
:bhug:

A wild guess here, but I have seen threads before about irregular periods and other hormonal issues when starting LC. Read that it has to do with a rapid loss of visceral fat, which can release estrogen, fat being able to create and store estrogen. That hormonally active fat is a thoery why more obese women get breast cancer. When that fat is lost, the estrogen has to go somewhere, and for a period of time it recirculates, upsetting cycles..and maybe hot flashes?
It can rebalance your hormones too..or maybe throw them out of whack?

And for some women on LC, they get better:

Interesting. That hormonally active fat is one of the reasons I was so adamant to lose weight after finishing my treatment, although in reality my cancer was only very slightly estrogen sensitive.

So you gave up the tamoxifen after four years, JEY ? Did you feel better after stopping ?
