I've searched on this forum several different ways, all of them come out with quite a few references to Potassium, but none that I could find on how much to take.

The google search that I did told me that too much potassium is bad for you another that said our bodies can handle an excess of potassium. Also that most American diets have too high of a Sodium/Potassium ratio. The recommended level of potassium I could find was anywhere from 1200 mg to 5000 mg (1.2 to 5 grams)

The supplements come in only 99mg form (in US), so how much supplementation is good for an "average" LC diet? How much do you personally take?

A good article:

hi,

I've learned from many on here that taking up to 400 mg a day is safe. I personally needed at least 300 mg while doing induction and now i take in about 200-250 a day. Plus I use 1/2 salt which is 1:1 ratio of salt to potassium.

For a detailed explanation of potassium dose, check out Potassium Intake (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=214973#post214973).

Potassium, potassium, potassium! (http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=341682#post341682) explains why the dose in over-the-counter tablets appears to be low, discusses safety of taking potassium and I included a list of low-carb foods that are naturally high in this mineral.

I'm bloated, by back / joints are stiff and I have not been getting enough Potassium!!

I just bought a supplement (100mg) and took 4, as I need a quick fix! I'll try to get more in my daily diet.

Glad to know the proper dose now, since too much is toxic, I understand.

It states the potassium amounts on the side of the no-salt container.

1/4 tsp = 650 mg

I take 1/2 tsp which = 1300mg(I put it in a small amount of water and throw it back...followed by drinking lots of clear water behind it)
plus I use it as salt during the day so I'm actually taking about 1800-2000mg a day I guess.

***make sure you look for the amounts on your container...it may be a differnt brand****

Actually, when I was looking up Potassium this is what it said about salt intake.....

Best used with
A person should take twice as much potassium as sodium, and is best taken with vitamin B6.
