Hi Karen,
I figured you would be the best person to ask this question? Is chutney considered to be low carb? I don't have any in my cupboard at the moment so I can't look it up. I love it and when I was a Weight Watchers victim, there was just no way I could eat it! With this new and wonderful WOL, I am oooohhh so hopeful that I can have some occasionally. :p
Any thoughts or suggestions on brands if they are okay?
Thanks a ton for your help!

What kind of chutney? Do you mean a sweet mango chutney or something more authentic like coriander or pickled lime chutney?

Hi Karen!
I think that it's safe to assume that Mango Chutney is a no go. It
has to have sugar and probably some other sweetener in it, never mind the mangoes. I actually prefer the more authentic types, thank goodness! If you know of one that is okay, can you pass the name along? I so appreciate you! :bhug:
Thanks very much!

I like Patak's Lime Pickle. It's really hot and goes well with eggs.
Why don't you have alook at the the ingredients on the jars and go by those, watching for sugar. Patak's has a pretty big line of chutneys and pickles. It's not as if you are going to be eating cupfuls, or are you? ;)
I used to really like coriander chutney that I would buy in a jar. It was in the refrigerator section of east Indian stores.

PS: I live in Victoria, and don't get off the rock often, but when I do I will make a point at stopping for a meal at the Fishhouse!

You should get off the rock! We have had some great get togethers in Vancouver.

Hi,
Believe it or not, I saw your post after doing a net search on chutney and your message was one that was returned by the GOOGLE search engine. To make a medium story short, I joined because I am dieting and secondly to answer your question.
As you might guess, I have done some research on Chutney based on a Betty Crocker slow cooker cookbook I recently bought. I just made 2 kinds - pineapple and a general purpose one including tomato, apple, raisins, onions, celery and a few other vegetables and fruits. Not much in the way of carbs and NO ADDITIONAL SUGAR!
My experiments are to use Chutney, as shown in some of the Betty Crocker recipes with various meats to give taste without gravies and other stuff like that.
Tomorrow I will be using the general purpose chutney with ham, celery and chinese cabbage in the slow cooker to see how it turns out... my wife's idea for the veggies... probably have it over Basmati rice or some other low carb ingredient.
So my opinion is that chutney is ok as long as it does not have too much sugar in it - I will be using equal with the final product if it isn't sweet enough.
Take care,
